Katherine Arens

I find joy in the local, the ordinary, the eccentric. The “discovery” IS the thing — what I DIDN’T know going into the piece IS what makes it art. When the big change occurs and the painting is DIFFERENT than what I expected… that is where I find my JOY.

In 2009, I received my BLS  from the University of Mary Washington with an emphasis in Studio Art.  I graduated with several departmental awards including:

Department Award, Ceramics, 2006, UMW Annual Student Art, Juror: Trudi Van Dyke;

Department Award, Textiles, 2007, UMW Annual Student Art, Exhibition Juror: Ray Kass;

Emil Schnellock Award in Painting, 2008, Self Narrative #1, Juror: Howard Risatti;

Undergraduate Research Grant, Fall 2008, Individual Study: Titian’s Altarpieces, Venice, Italy.
